こんにちは、テリー・マクミランです。オバマ大統領を通したアメリカ政治の扉を開く第一歩となるサイトを日本の皆様にわかりやすく作りたいと思いeigobama.comをスタートいたしました。

オバマ大統領の週刊ビデオ演説をスピーチのビデオとともに字幕つきでお届けします。また関心ごとにカテゴリーを選び、そのテーマに対するオバマ大統領の政策を見ていただくこともできます。また私も一般アメリカ国民としてこうした変革についてのコメントを書いていきます。

2008年のオバマ大統領選挙キャンペーンでは、日本、中国、韓国、香港を含む北アジアの選挙キャンペーン地域代表を務めさせていただきました。類まれな大統領であるオバマ大統領をたくさんのアメリカ人が海外で選出していくことは、とてもすばらしい経験になったと思います。

デジタル・コンテンツ・プロデューサーとして働き、日本には11年以上住んでいます。チームで動画やポッドキャスト、ウェブサイトを作るという仕事です。そうした仕事の中でもここ6年間ずっと、プログレッシブな政治というのにずっと熱意を持ってきました。

eigobama.comというプロジェクトが日本にとって必要たるものになるだろうという私の動機が三つあります。

1．オバマ大統領の魅力。オバマ大統領のスピーチを扱った英語学習本がベストセラーになるなど日本でも多くの人がオバマ大統領に魅力を感じている。オバマ大統領の声にインスピレーションを与えられる人や、アメリカにとっての変革がどんなものであるか関心を持つ人がたくさんいる。

２．英語を習いたいという需要。個人的な目標として、仕事のため、国際的な場でコミュニケーションをとりたいという目的で英語を覚えたい人がたくさんいる。

３．日本における政治不満。日本の将来に不安を感じまた現在の政治に不満を感じる日本人が少なくない。しかし個人がどうこうできることでもないと思ってしまっている。日本での変革はアメリカでの変革と同じようにはいかないだろうが、当サイトがアメリカの変革についてその背景を伝えることでより深い理解をしてもらう助けとなりたい。

だからeigobama.comでは英語を学習するだけでなくアメリカ的視点から実際の「チェンジ（変革）」を見届けてもらうことができます。

Hi. I’m Terri MacMillan. I wanted to create a site that opens the door to America’s politics with President Obama, in a way that my friends in Japan can understand. We will subtitle his Weekly Address for you, as well as other speeches. You can look for the category that interests you and see what he is doing about it. And, I’ll write on the site too, to give you a regular American’s perspective on those changes.

In 2008, I was the Regional Field Director for Northern Asia for the Obama Campaign, covering Japan, China, South Korea and Hong Kong. It was an amazing experience, because so many Americans living abroad came together to elect President Obama: a very different kind of President.

I’ve lived in Japan for over 11 years: I’m a digital content producer. That means I work with a team to produce videos and podcasts and websites. But, progressive politics has been my passion for the past 6 years.

Three trends in Japan made me feel that there is a need for this project:

1. Lots of people in Japan are fascinated with President Obama. There are best-selling books that use the text of his speeches to help language learners improve their English vocabulary. Some of my friends say that his voice inspires them. Some people say that they are very interested to see what Change looks like in America.

2. Many Japanese want to learn English: as a personal accomplishment, for their jobs, and to be able to communicate in the international language.

3. Many people are unhappy with the state of politics in Japan, and worried about the future. But they don’t feel that they can change the way things work in Japanese politics. Of course, change in Japan won’t look like change in America, because our cultures are very different. So, this site will give some deeper context to our changes.

So, eigobama.com can help you to learn more English, but, even more, it’s a way to help you see change happen through American eyes.
